THE COLOR CHART PAGE
On this page we will do our best to help you understand the true colors of AKC Pomeranian's
as accepted and designated by The American Kennel Club.
We will also help you sort out myths and "made up colors".
We will also help you to understand why a dog is the color it is and how it got that way
genetically.
1.) SABLE IS THE MOST COMMON COLOR THAT POMERANIAN'S COME IN. WHETHER IT BE A SOLID OR A PARTI,  SABLEING
IS MOST ANY COLOR (MOST COMMONLY BLACK) WITH THE SABLE HAIRS MIXED WITH THE BASE COLOR OF THE DOG.
THE DOGS BASE COLOR IS MOST COMMONLY FOUND DIRECTLY BEHIND THE BASE OF THE EAR.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT DEGREES OF SABLEING,  SOME ARE VERY DARK RETAINING ALMOST A SADDLE LIKE PATTERN
ON THEM, AND SOME ARE LEFT WITH ONLY BLACK WHISKERS AT ADULTHOOD.
SABLE HAS BEEN DESCRIBED MANY WAYS TO ME BY MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE. LET ME HELP YOU TO DETERMINED
WHAT COLOR YOUR DOG IS.
BROWN RED, ORANGE, CHOCOLATE, CREAM, AND BLUES CAN ALL BE SABLES. THE BASE COLOR OF THE DOG HAS
NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SABLING ON THE DOG. SABLING CAN BE BLACK CHOCOLATE OR BLUE. THE BASE COLOR IS
THE PREFIX OF THE DESCRIPTION OF THE DOG SUCH AS:
A RED SABLE, WHICH IS RARE. THE DOG WOULD HAVE A RED BASE COLOR AND BLACK MIXED THROUGH OUT ITS COAT.
AN ORANGE SABLE IS JUST THAT AN DEPTH OF ORANGE FROM A LIGHT DREAMSICLE COLOR TO A FIREY BRIGHT
VIBRNAT IRISH SETTER RED COLOR TO A TEDDY BEAR BROWN
(OR COMMONLY DESCRIBED AS A BROWN IN COLOR) ALL THE DOGS BELOW ARE EXAMPLES OF ORANGE SABLES. WE
WILL ADD MORE SABLES COLORS AS WE CAN AQUIRE PICTURES.
RED SABLE
ORANGE SABLE
ORANGE SABLE PARTI COLOR
CLEAR COLORS ARE JUST THAT .................. ANY COLOR THAT IS CLEAR OF SABLEING
THIS WOULD INCLUDE RED, ORANGE, WHITE, CREAM, BLUE, LAVENDER, CHOCOLATE, BLACK .
I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THE BLACK CHOCOLATE AND OR BLUE AND TAN COLOR I HAVE TO DO MORE RESEARCH
TO SEE IF THEY ARE SABLE GENES OR CLEAR GENES.
THE DOGS TO THE SIDES ARE EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF CLEAR
CREAMS NOTE THE ABSENCE OF BLACK TIPPING IN THEIR COAT
COLOR AS OPPOSED TO THE DOGS ABOVE.
THIS EXAMPLE IS TRUE FOR ANY COLOR POM.
IF NO BLACK TIPPING IS PRESENT EVEN AROUND THE MUZZLE
AND THE WHISKERS ARE THE SAME COLOR AS THE DOG IT IS A
"CLEAR COLOR" MEANING, VOID OF ANOTHER COLORED TIPPING.
CHOCOLATE IS SELF EXPLANATORY
IT IS A DILUTE OF BLACK AND CAN RANGE FROM
ALMOST BLACK TO A DUSTY CINNAMON COLOR AS
LONG AS THE DOG A SOLID COLOR AND NOT SABLED.
LIPS EYE RIMS AND FOOT PADS SHOULD BE
CHOCOLATE ALSO CALLED "SELF COLORED"
MOCHA IS A SOLID COLOR BUT CHOCOLATE ALSO
COMES IN PARTI COLOR
TRI COLOR IS JUST THAT
IT IS 3 SPECIFIC COLORS ON A DOG IN A PATTERN AND HAS THE
"TAN" GENE NO MATTER THE BASE COLOR THEY HAVE TO HAVE TAN
MARKINGS EITHER ON THEIR FACE LEGS AND UNDERCARRIAGE OF
THE TAIL. WHERE EVER WHITE IS PRESENT THERE WILL BE NO
COLOR PATTERN OR MARKINGS. THE TAN MARKINGS CAN RANGE
FROM DEEP MAHOGANY TO SILVERY WHITE IN COLOR.
THIS GIRL ON THE LEFT IS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF A BLACK
AND TAN TRI COLORED PARTI WITH MAHOGANY MARKINGS
Beaver is an official AKC color AND it is a common
dog. Most beavers are born chocolate and fade to
this color. Lips eye rims and foot pads are generally
chocolate or a dilute of chocolate. Beavers are not
TYPICALLY a desired color for the show ring due
to the fact that they usually have hazel eyes.
I THINK THEY ARE A BEAUTIFUL COLOR
TRUE PURE ICE WHITE
WHITE IS JUST THAT, PURE WHITE
WITH NO CREAM POINTS OR BLACK
HAIRS ANYWHERE ON THE DOG
EVEN THE WHISKERS ARE WHITE.
FOOT PADS, NOSE, LIPS AND EYE
RIMS SHOULD BE BLACK ALSO FOR
PROPER PIGMENTATION TO MEET
AKC STANDARDS.
TRUE WHITES ARE VERY RARE AND
ARE CONSIDERED A CLEAR COLOR

BLACK AND TAN
IS JUST THAT A BLACK BASE COAT WITH TAN
MARKINGS. THE TAN MARKINGS MUST BE CORRECT
AND PROPERLY PLACED IN PROPORTION ON THE DOG
TO BE SHOWN BUT MANY VARIATIONS ARE SEEN IN
THIS COLOR. TAN OVER THE EYEBROWS, A TAN "BOW
TIE" PATTERN SHOULD BE ACROSS THE CHEST AND
BLACK AT LEAST HALF WAY DOWN THE LEGS ON TOP
OF THE TAN PATTERN IS MOST DESIRABLE. TAN ALSO
MUST BE PRESENT AND VISABLE UNDER THE TAIL AREA
..THIS PATTERN ALSO COMES IN BLUE AND CHOCOLATE
AND THE DILLUTE VERSION OF LAVENDER
AND IN MERLE ALSO
PARTI COLORS
ARE A WHOLE NEW BALL OF WAX BUT SO SIMPLE TO IDENTIFY. IF THE DOG HAS MORE THAN 50%
WHITE IN ITS BODY IN A PATTERED DESIGN THEN IT IS A PARTI COLOR. SABLES WITH "BUFF OR WHITE"
UNDERCARRIAGES, ARE NOT PARTI COLORS. THE DOGS IN THE PICTURES BELOW ARE EXTREME
EXAMPLES OF PARTI COLORED POMERANIAN'S AND THIS MUCH WHITE IS USUALLY DESCRIBED AS
"PIEBALD". PARTI COLORED POMERANIAN'S CAN BE ANY "BASE" COAT COLOR
AS LONG AS THEY HAVE A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE OF WHITE ON THEM THEY ARE CONSIDERED PARTIS.
CHECK AKC STANDARDS TO SEE WHAT PERCENTAGE IS BEST FOR THE SHOW RING.
SABLES
MISMARKS ARE ANY DOG WITH LESS THAN 20% OR TRACES OF WHITE MARKINGS BUT THEY ARE STILL
PARTI COLORED (GENETICLY) DOGS. THEY ARE INVALUABLE IN A HEAVILY WHITE PARTI BREEDING
PROGRAM SO AS NOT TO GET ALL WHITE DOGS THAT MAY POSSIBLY BE DEAF WHICH IS RARE BUT
POSSIBLE. YOU ALSO DON'T WANT ALBINO DOGS. QUALITY AND SOUNDNESS SHOULD ALWAYS BE YOUR
FIRST CONSIDERATION WHEN CHOOSING ANY DOG FOR A BREEDING PROGRAM
REGARDLESS OF COLOR.
ORANGE SABLE PARTI COLOR
THESE LIL BABIES ARE MISMARKS AND
CARRY THE PARTI GENE.
THEY ARE ABLE TO PRODUCE PARTIS AND
WILL MOST LIKELY PRODUCE THEM IF
BRED TO PARTI COLORED DOGS.
PARTI MISMARKS CAN COME IN ANY
COLOR OR PATTERN SUCH AS SABLE
BLACK CHOCOLATE CREAM, MERLE OR
BRINDLE AND TRI COLOR
DOGS WITH MORE OF A COLOR
PATTERN IN THEIR WHITE MARKINGS
ARE OFTEN REFERRED TO AS IRISH
MARKED PARTIS,
THEY USUALLY CONSIST OF WHITE
CHEST, FEET OR LEGS A NECK BAND
AND USUALLY A WHITE TIPPED TAIL
THEY CAN SOMETIMES HAVE A BLAZE.
RED  SABLE
BLACK IS A SELF EXPLANATORY
SOLID COLOR
WE DO NOT OWN OR BREED BLACK
SO I DO NOT HAVE PICTURES AT
THIS TIME OF AT BLACK DOGS BUT
BLACK IS JUST THAT JETT BLACK!
MIS MARKED TRI
